Detailed Information/Report on Activities

To chew and swallow smoothly, the coordination of respiration and them is essential and a cough reflex protects the airway when food is aspirated into the trachea. Prof. Brendan J Canning (Johns Hopkins University) is a leading researcher in the respiration and cough research filed. In this study, we aim to clarify the functional interaction among chewing, swallowing, respiration and cough and the neural mechanism of initiation of swallowing.
